Clinton's national popular vote lead climbs to 2.65 million (2.0%): https://t.co/j58GaxfPmH — Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) December 6, 2016 Clinton is also closing in on Obama's raw vote total from 2012: x Obama got 65.9 million votes in '12. Clinton now at 65.4 million. She could get really close w/ NYC absentees: https://t.co/j58GaxfPmH — Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) December 5, 2016 Campaign Action You can watch the ongoing vote total for yourself in Wasserman's detailed spreadsheet . There might be another million votes left to count. Her final lead over Trump will be very close to Bush’s over Kerry in 2004 (3.012 million ). That's not all. According to the United States Election Project , turnout as a percentage of the voting eligible population is now likely to reach at least 59.1%. This makes turnout in 2016 higher than 2012, and the third-highest turnout election since 18 year-olds were given the right to vote via the 26th amendment before the 1972 elections. (The top two elections of the post-1972 era were 2004 with 60.1%, and 2008 with 61.6%). Hillary Clinton received millions more votes than Donald Trump in a high turnout election. It is an undemocratic disgrace she will not be our next President. If our laws allow for this result, then our laws say that our votes are not all equal. Sign if you agree: Elect the President of the United States by national popular vote. The person who gets the most votes should win. Daily Kos and allied organizations delivering millions of petition signatures in opposition to TPP and Fast Track Trade authority. As Executive Campaign Director here at Daily Kos, one of the most frequent criticisms I hear of our work is some variation on why petitions are useless: Petitions are pointless. They don't accomplish anything. Decision makers don't take them seriously — if they pay attention to them at all. Sure, that's fair enough. It is true that members of Congress, heads of corporations, members of the news media, and other decision makers don't take petitions seriously. (Although petitions can be useful in getting you meetings with decision makers, or in getting a media write-up that mentions your targeted decision makers, both of which have utility for political activists.) However, just because decision makers don't take petitions seriously misses the main point of petitions and why they are important. Petitions are sign-up forms for your organization. They are a way to build a contact list of like-minded people, so that you can send those people emails with more impactful actions on related topics at a later date. Since Daily Kos founded our email list in August 2010, we have had more than 2,000 petitions. Very few of these petitions had any activist impact, in and of themselves. However, collectively they generated us an email list of over 4,000,000 people (2,760,000 of which are still subscribed) who we then contacted with calls to action that achieved the following which are continued below the fold: Over $10,000,000 raised for our endorsed candidates, and over $7,500,000 raised for Daily Kos itself; Over 24,000 volunteers to help get out the vote in 2016, and 6,000 in 2014, who collectively generated several million voter contacts; Over 500,000,000 clicks on the Daily Kos Recommended email, helping to spread progressive content far and wide; Over 4,000,000 signups for Democratic candidates and progressive organizations through our paid lead generation program, including 206,154 for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and 179,684 for Bernie Sanders's campaign (the Sanders signups went on to donate $5.7 million to Sanders); Read More Continue reading These two tweets show why so much of what you have read about the election is BS Chris Bowers Daily Kos Staff Tuesday November 22, 2016 · 7:45 AM PST 2016/11/22 · 07:45 Please log in or sign up to continue. How people were not excited to come out and vote for her? About how she was millions of votes below where Obama's total? Well, that was all a lot of BS. Here's the truth, courtesy of political numbers guru Dave Wasserman of The Cook Political Report and Fivethirtyeight: x Hillary Clinton looks likely to hit 65M votes, roughly on par w/ Obama '12, and win popular vote by ~2.5M: https://t.co/0zZgOdrQgY — Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) November 22, 2016 x It looks very likely that by the time we're done counting, 2016 turnout as % of citizen voting age population will exceed 2012. — Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) November 22, 2016 It is utterly outrageous that someone can win by 2.5 million votes and not become President. It is true that Hillary Clinton will not become President of the United States. However, that is not because of low turnout, or because people were not excited about her. It is because the United States of America is not good enough at democracy. Sign if you agree: Enough of the Electoral College thwarting democracy. It's time we choose our Presidents by national popular vote. Read comments Surprise! Voter turnout in 2016 likely higher than 2012 Chris Bowers Daily Kos Staff Tuesday November 15, 2016 · ...
